Resilience in children in the aftermath of disasters: A systematic review and a new perspective on individual, interpersonal, group, and intergroup level factors

Abstract Disasters can impact upon individuals, families, and communities in multiple ways. Research has mainly focused on risk protective factors relating to the child (individual level) family (interpersonal level), not taking into account processes at level of social groups. The present review aims (a) psychological research disasters determined by natural events childhood, (b) distinguish individual, interpersonal, group, intergroup levels, (c) emphasize importance considering resilience as a key outcome. We reviewed 294 studies (in addition 28 reviews‐meta‐analyses, 29 naturalistic interventions), identified individual (e.g., demographics, exposure, differences), interpersonal parent–child relationship, school environment), group identity, membership), (relations between different groups) levels. argue that an integrated model these their interplay is needed design interventions enhance children communities. extend previous theorizations providing wider conceptualization distress resilience, A multidimensional approach consequences crucial understand development well‐being, effective interventions.
